World Mental Health Day 2019: A Small Step Towards A Suicide Free World

World Mental Health Day is celebrated yearly on the 10th of October to raise awareness for mental health. Mental health is completely central to everyone’s well-being. Everyone around the globe, from every race, religion and cast can relate to their mental welling.

The world gets together every year in the hope of fighting the stigma that mental health is secondary. As unfortunate events in the past show, no one can ignore mental health issues. Such issues tend to aggravate quicker than we anticipate, proving to be fatal in many cases.

2019 – Focus on suicide prevention

This year, it was collectively decided that the theme would be “Suicide Prevention”. Given the recent rise in suicides from all around the world starting from issues like depression and anxiety, it was imperative to raise it on the global platform.

There is no denying the fact that suicide is a gut wrenching tragedy. It not only takes the life of those who attempt it but also deeply traumatizes everyone close to the deceased. It leaves them with unforgiving, unforgettable scars in their hearts and minds forever. As the world tries its best to tackle suicide and understand its causes, it still desperately needs an urgent and sustained approach to prevent it.

Further steps

While it is pleasing to see that suicide is being talked about on a global platform,  a single day every year is not enough to raise awareness against such a grave issue.

People must understand that in order to prevent suicide, help must be taken from experts. It may be a somewhat expensive and a comparatively lengthy process. However, there is no denying that it is a step in the right direction. Nothing is more important than the life of an individual.

Everyone worldwide can achieve great things and help others by learning about suicide and mental health in general. This is exactly where days like today can help in achieving global emotional stability.

A promise

On World Mental Health Day 2019, all of us have the opportunity to learn about and understand the reality of suicide and the grave consequences caused by such an act. Although disturbing, there is always a reason behind someone being bottled to such an extent that they end up taking their own life.

So, we all must promise to at least ourselves that we will study and understand the symptoms of issues like depression and anxiety and reach out to the people who require urgent help. Such minor acts can go a long way in preventing suicide and saving lives of many of our brothers and sisters.
